Conversations with Joe, Halloween 2013.
Me: "What do you want to be for Halloween, Joe?"
Joe: "I want to be a snake. A BIG snake."
Me: "Oh! Okay! A snake!"
Joe: "Yes. And Maggie wants to be a turtle."
Me: "Maggie wants to be a turtle? Did Maggie tell you this?"
Joe: "Maggie wants to be turtle."
Me: "Okay ..."
Joe: "Maggie doesn't want to be a turtle on the LAND. She wants to be an OCEAN turtle."
Me: "Okay, Maggie, an OCEAN turtle it is."
Me: "Joe, what color snake do you want to be?"
Joe: "Green, with black stripes."
Rebecca: "What are you going to be for Halloween, Joe?"
Joe: "A snake."
Rebecca: "What kind of snake?"
Joe: "A big green snake."
Joe: "But I asked for green with black stripes! Not white and yellow and brown stripes!"
Me: "Yes, but I thought this would be more realistic, like a real snake ... look at the head I made! Look, these are the big yellow eyes! "
Moment of tension while Joe considers.
Joe: "Okay. I want to put it on."
Me: Sigh of relief.
Joe: "Daddy is going to be a red dragon for Halloween. You make a red dragon costume, mama?"
Me, surrounded by piles of felt scraps and polyfill, on the eve of Halloween, desperately working: "Um ..."
Dad: "The red dragon is the snake's only enemy! I'm going to get you! Arrrggh! Nooooo! Snake got me! He's biting my neck!!!"
Me: "Remind me NOT to make the kid's costumes next year, okay?"
Me: "Did you have a fun Halloween, Joe!"
Joe, stuffing candy in his face: "Yes!" Munch munch.
Me: "Well, making these costumes was actually a lot of fun ..."

So fun! Kids conversations are a joy to read.
ReplyDeleteI know making his costumes is a lot of work, but it's something my mom did for me all through my growing up and those are some of my most treasured memories as an adult. :)
These are awesome! I'm loving the raw-edge appliqué. Also, how great is it that Joe suggested a set of three thematically-linked costumes? Who doesn't crave a group costume? You know what Rowan wanted Mark to be, to go with his stingray costume? Gandalf.
ReplyDeleteYou did a great job! The kids (and Steve) look adorable.
ReplyDeleteJoe :) I enjoyed reading this.
